Sleep Disordered Breathing

Sleep Disordered Breathing

ARTISTRY, SCIENCE, AND PRECISION.

Sleep disordered breathing is a blanket term for a range of conditions, from common snoring to obstructive sleep apnea, which can have lasting effects on a person’s daily health.

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when a patient’s airway closes off or collapses temporarily during sleep, causing periods of interrupted breathing throughout the night. This unhealthy breathing pattern deprives the brain and organs of oxygen, which over time can cause significant health problems. Over time, untreated sleep apnea can result in severe and even life-threatening health conditions, such as:

  • Heart disease (including heart-attack and stroke)
  • Somatic Syndromes (e.g., Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

One of the best treatments available today for sleep disorder breathing is called a CPAP machine. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Air Pressure, and it works by connecting to the patient’s respiratory system via a facemask, nasal cannula, or nasal prongs. The machine connects to the mask or prongs and then releases a stream of positive air pressure, which gently prevents the patient’s airway from closing during sleep. A CPAP machine can significantly improve a patient’s breathing during sleep, which helps with wakefulness, concentration, and mood throughout the day.

Sleep disordered breathing is a complex problem that requires the diagnostic skills of a specialist in Sleep Medicine. Two of the most common treatments are the CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) Machine, and a specialized oral appliance. We work with a team of specialists to customize a treatment plan for each patient.
